    At this time I am making my pens on a very old (1930s) and well-built manual lathe. I love the thing. Every time I use it, I think back to what it must have been like when it was new. Lathes such as these were a staple in shops everywhere. The smokey and oil filled atmosphere and the sound of the humming from them all…ah the industrial revolution.

    These lathes were used all over the world. The machines were used in every type of industry, in schools, home workshops and large manufacturers. They were used where the finest accuracy was required. Much of their success was due in part to trained and skilled machinists. At least 75 percent of the schools and colleges in the United States were using these lathes. Fast forward to today, CNC machines are just as common.

    I would like to begin to utilize the technology of today and begin making these pens the CNC way. To do that, I need your help. I have found the right machine and have configured the tooling and programming and am ready to take my pens from levers and hand wheels to computers and controls but it’s all just a dream without your help. I have made a nice variety of rewards for those of you who are kind enough to make a pledge and help me get to the next century.

    To be clear, this kickstarter is for equipment, a CNC machine with tooling to be exact. The goal level is set to the best of my calculations to cover the cost of the machine, tooling, and material…my time is free and I am not looking to collect the cash and hand off the work to a machine shop. All the money is being invested into the business.

    The Product

    SS001 is the genesis of a new line of modern ballpoint pen and is the first in the SS Collection of pens. The aim with this pen was to deliver a high quality pocket sized pen which has been achieved by combining ergonomic design with modern aesthetics.

    Most pens on the market are over-priced and do not offer value for money. SS001 bridges the gap between cost, style and function. This was a motivating factor for me to pursue the SS001 and launch it on Kickstarter.

    There are a variety of pens on the market, however; few combine the functional classic nature of the pen with the modern needs of a stylus – the SS001 caters for this modern need through an optional component.

    What makes the mk1 different?

    The Sunderland mk1 has several unique features that make it worthy to add to any serious pen collection or be the start of a new one.

    The Patent Pending Thread-On Cap:

    Our market research indicated that most pen enthusiasts prefer a screw-on cap; however, having exposed threads on the grip can be unsightly and uncomfortable to hold.  To solve these issues, we designed the threads to be hidden inside the tip of the pen, unexposed to the user.

    The Machined Clip:

    There are a lot of nice pens available, but most use a formed sheet metal clip.  We really wanted to avoid using stamped sheet metal parts on a high-quality pen, so we put extra effort into the design and manufacturing of the clip on the mk1: It is machined from a block of aerospace grade, 17-4 stainless steel.  This is the same material commonly used for jet engine components.  The clip was designed to take advantage of the extreme strength of this material, while maintaining the flexibility required for a functional clip.

    Designing the clip around a machined component gave us the opportunity to add features that are both decorative and functional. The clip flute adds style and was also used to help tune the stiffness of the clip.

    The Pen with No Name is unlike any other pen. It is machined from 6061 aluminum, contains four neodymium (rare-earth) magnets and houses the amazing Montblanc cartridges (Fineliner & Rollerball). Combined with the optional magnetic base, this will be something you can proudly display on your desk at home or work, or better yet, one for each!

    While I designed the pen to house the Fineliner cartridge, it will also take other refills such as the widely available Pilot G2 using a small spacer. However, I would highly recommend the Fineliner by Montblanc as it will make you think twice about using any other refill.

    My focus is solely on building a pen, not a brand, so you won’t find any type of branding on this pen.
